NIGERIA: FULL TEXT OF SENATOR JOHN UDOEDEHE'S INTERVIEW

 .
Why I may defect to PDP- Udoedehe
Senator John James Akpan Udoedehe is an All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial aspirant in Akwa Ibom State. In this interview with ENO-OBONG OKON, Udoedehe says that if the crisis that has attended the governorship primary election in his party is not resolved fairly, he may defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Excerpts:
There are speculations that because of the outcome of the governorship primaries in your party, you will be defecting to the PDP. How true is that?
Incidentally, I have been accused of not opening up the space in APC for people to come in, and the blackmail went on for a long time. They would have said they wanted the ticket of the APC. So they met some of our leaders and tried to show that they had more money than me. According to them, they donated billions of naira to the party as the only group that can challenge the incumbent governor, Dr. Godswill Akpabio naira to naira, dollar to dollar. So some people in Nigeria who don’t understand Akwa Ibom politics think otherwise. I am not moving to PDP for now, what happened was that they came with a very violent and volatile arrangement to destroy our party. Because of what happened to me in 2011, I did not want that same thing to happen again. What we did was to walk away and we advised them that that was not election. Our party’s constitution does not allow option A4 and what they did was to open the stadium’s back door for people to come in; PDP people, not the real delegates. What we needed to do we did to ask them to stop so that we could conduct a free and fair primary, if we had a winner, then we could congratulate ourselves, then we could walk away and move forward. What they did was completely alien to our principles. I am presently not moving to PDP, I am still in APC. We have an option of appeal. In their wisdom, if they consider what they are considering, then we have no alternative than to appeal. And it is not going to be a personal decision; a lot of our followers will meet and take a decision for the interest of our group and we will chart a way forward.
Could the way forward include moving to the PDP, a party that you have always been criticising?
Yes. It also means that we will have to choose between one evil and another evil, it will mean that there is no difference between APC and PDP.

WORLD NEWS: Family found after 10 days in wilderness

Sydney -
A 5-year-old boy and his 7-year-old brother were recovering in a hospital on Monday after surviving with their father for 10 days in the Australian wilderness with little food and in weather conditions that ranged from stormy to scorching.
Their ordeal began December 11 when dad Steven Van Lonkhuyzen took a wrong turn during a family road trip and then got his four-wheel-drive vehicle bogged in mud.
The family was rescued on Sunday after farmer Tom Wagner went searching and found them in the remote Expedition National Park.
“They were pretty hungry by the time I got to them, and pretty happy to see me,” Wagner said.

He said the younger boy, Timothy, kept asking him if he had any eggs, while the older one, Ethan, appeared dehydrated.
He said the father had given the limited food he had to his sons, who themselves had gone with little or nothing to eat for a week.
“Luckily it rained,” he said. “Otherwise they would have perished.”
Queensland Police Acting Superintendent Mick Bianchi says Van Lonkhuyzen had planned to drive from his home in Brisbane to Cairns using an inland route.
“Quite simply, he took a wrong turn,” Bianchi said.
He said the boys were getting their strength back after their ordeal, during which temperatures rose to about 38 degrees Celsius (100 Fahrenheit). The boys were both listed as being in a stable condition at the Taroom Hospital.
Bianchi said the family had limited provisions but luckily it was stormy at times and they were able to collect rainwater in a plastic container. He said the father had tried to attract attention by laying out high-visibility items around his vehicle and lighting fires. He said Van Lonkhuyzen made the right choice by staying with his vehicle.
“They were very trying conditions, and it would have tested the family's relationship,” Bianchi said.
He said the father attempted to establish routines with his children and keep them occupied.
He said there was little or no cellphone reception in the park and so the trio hadn't been able to contact anybody. Bianchi said the boys' mother had raised the alarm when the trio didn't arrive at a friend's home in Cairns.
He said the national park is not usually visited at this time of year because of the extreme weather conditions. -

Endless Detention Of Citizen Odudu Ukpanah By Gov. Akpabio: Injustice Taken Too Far By Inibehe Effiong

Citizen Odudu Albert Ukpanah is the only son of Late Engr. Albert Jimmy Ukpanah from Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Odudu, 31, a brilliant and peace loving man holds a B. Sc. in Geophysics from the University of Calabar and an M. Sc. from Coventry University, UK.
Odudu Albert Ukpanah

The Late Engr. Albert Ukpanah was an outspoken chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He had served his party as a member of the State Working Committee of the PDP in Akwa Ibom State. He was also a one time Caretaker Vice Chairman of Ukanafun LGA of Akwa Ibom State.
Notably, aside being a thorn in the flesh of some prominent politicians and political office holders in his area, the late Engr. Albert Ukpanah was a vociferous opponent of the 2015 senatorial ambition of Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
Like several other persons in his area that subscribe to the PDP zoning policy, he believed that it was the turn of his area (Abak Federal Constituency) to produce the next senator to represent the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State in the Senate come 2015. He saw Akpabio's Senate bid as a grave injustice to his people.
On Wednesday March 12, 2014 he was brutally murdered by dare-devil assassins at his Abak residence at about 9:40pm.
From the cogent, uncontradicted and plausible account given by the immediate family of the slain politician, the deceased asked his son, Odudu, who was the only person with him at the material time to bring three (3) plastic chairs for himself and yet to be identified visitors that he was expecting.
After bringing out the chairs as directed, Odudu went inside the living room and continued watching the European league which he was enjoying prior to the arrival of the visitors. His father later came into the living room and took drinks (Remy martins and 1 can stout), which he ostensibly offered his guests. Upon sensing that the expected meeting had lasted for too long, Odudu went out to check on his father only to meet him lying lifeless in the pool of his blood.
Mr. Odudu who was very deeply frightened immediately raised an alarm and sought the assistance of neighbours who came to his aid. They then helped him carry his father's body to the hospital where he was pronounced dead by doctors. He made a report to the police division in Abak LGA where the incident took place the following morning after which one of his aunts took him away to Eket LGA for safety.
Therefore, while it is true that the police officers from the State Command did not meet him at home when they first arrived the scene, it does not imply that he escaped since the aunt had taken him away.
Let me also state that when the police officers from Abak arrived the scene, they saw the bottle of the Remy martins and the container of the can stout which they took away. Photographs evidencing this are there for all to see.
An investigation into the incident was taken over by the State Police Command which resulted in the production of a Police Investigation Report signed by one Sgt. Ibediro Nnamdi, the Investigating Police Officer, (IPO), which was leaked to the media and published by several newspapers in Akwa Ibom State, I have the report with me
For clarity and benefit of doubt, the opinion/recommendation part of the Police Investigation Report dated 25th March, 2014 and signed by the IPO, Sgt. Ibediro Nnamdi, is reproduced verbatim as follows:
"In view of the above findings, the following suggestions are proffered. Since investigation into the case is still on, it is wise to nose around for more information that may reveal the REAL KILLERS of Hon. (Engr.), Albert Ukpanah, AS THE KILLING MIGHT BE POLITICALLY MOTIVATED ASSASSINS.
Above report is for your consideration and further directive, please" (emphasis mine).
I need to also mention here that in furtherance of its investigation into this case, the police had seized the GSM phone of the late Albert Ukpanah with an undertaking that same would be forwarded to the State Security Service (SSS) for forensic analysis since the deceased is believed to had communicated on phone with his yet to be identified guests before their arrival.
Till date, nothing has been heard of the result of the said forensic analysis by the SSS. Nigerians should ask the Akwa Ibom State Government, the SSS and the police about the outcome of the forensic analysis. A check with service providers would have revealed the call logs of the deceased shortly before he was murdered.
Instead of identifying the 'REAL KILLERS' of Albert Ukpanah as recommended by the IPO, the Akwa Ibom State Government led by Gov. Godswill Akpabio went on a frolic and had his only son, Odudu Ukpanah framed-up, arrested and charged to court on a totally senseless and trump-up charge of killing his own father.
A careful perusal of the proof of evidence filed alongside the information (charge) by the prosecution leads irresistibly to the conclusion that the paper on which the charge was preferred, have a far more value than the charge itself. There is absolutely no modicum of evidence, not even impliedly, establishing a nexus (link) between Odudu and the death of his father. It is just an audacious but shameless charade meant to cover the truth.
Those listed as witnesses are basically neighbours who responded to the alarm raised by Odudu. One even said in court during his testimony that he did not know why he was in court but later recalled that he was summoned to testify because he had made a statement to the police; a statement that did not incriminate Odudu in any way.
What on earth will make a young Masters Degree holder in Oil and Gas from one of the reputable universities in the UK and a well fared and very comfortable first and only son of an influential father think of taking the life of the man that meant the world to him? Why should Odudu kill the very father that sponsored his education abroad and bought him a car upon his return to Nigeria last year? Why?, and why?
There is this frivolous and very irresponsible propaganda that has been sold to credulous
members of the public by agents of the state government that Gov. Akpabio had offered the deceased the sum of 2million naira on the day he was murdered to assist him in taking care of his wife's failing health and that Odudu had killed the father to have the said money to himself.
Firstly, supposing without conceding that such money was actually offered to the deceased  by Gov. Akpabio, it is most unthinkable to say the least, for a sane person to even suggest that a person in the social and educational standing of Odudu will kill his father because of a paltry sum of 2million naira. This to me is a rape on logic and commonsense.
Secondly, did the governor called Odudu to inform him of his "generous offer" to the father? Since the governor had publicly admitted that he gave the said money, he should please tell us where and who the said money has been traced to?
Another lie being spread by the yes men of the government that I wish to puncture is the lie that Odudu broke the door to his father's bedroom and carted away the purported 2mllion  naira. The truth of the matter is that one of Odudu's aunts had advised the children of the deceased to search for and retrieve important documents for safety. Since the deceased had always locked his bedroom and the keys could not be found, the only option was to break the door. In the presence of relatives and neighbours, a carpenter was invited and he broke the door. This was in the evening of March 13, 2014 (a day after the incident).
As part of their investigation, the police had invited the carpenter to make a statement on what transpired which he did. Remarkably, the carpenter's statement was discarded.
Since the emergence of the present regime in Akwa Ibom State in 2007, there has been an unprecedented upsurge in unresolved high profile politically motivated killings.
Quoting an annual report by the Nigeria Police Force, a Sunday PUNCH report of November 21, 2010 (page 3) said there were 74,064 murders and similar cases in Nigeria within two years.
A state-by-state analysis of this record ranks Akwa Ibom State with a population of 3.9m (2006 estimate) as being the highest with preponderance of such crimes. The police report said in 2009 alone, Akwa Ibom recorded 177 murders (most of which are said to be politically motivated), 62 attempted murders, one manslaughter, eight suicides, 21 attempted suicides, 320 assaults, 18 child stealing, 93 rape cases and indecent assaults, 29 kidnappings, among others. The 2011 figures marked a remarkable increase when compared to 2007.
Sadly, no single conviction has been recorded for these murders.
The innocent Odudu Ukpanah has been in custody for the past seven months while the state continue to play hide and seek with the case. So far, efforts to admit him to bail has not seen  fruition. On Monday December 15th, 2014 the court adjourned ruling on his bail application to January 7th, 2014.
The mother of Odudu is now critically ill with cancer. The family have expended all they have on litigation all in a bid to secure the release of the poor young man who they know is completely and totally innocent of the charge against him.
I am appealing to our friends and partners in the civil society, human rights community and the media to rise up to this very historic battle for justice. I appeal to human rights lawyers, activists, journalists all lovers of justice in this country to come to the rescue of this family. We have done it before, lets do it again. This is an injustice of the century.
Our voices must be heard for the Ukpanahs'. They have suffered enough, and it is time to put an end to this state sponsored madness and oppression. This seems to me a case where the killers are looking for the killers and the victims of the killing are being haunted to cover the truth.
Engr. Albert Ukpanah must not die in vain. His killers and their sponsors must not laugh last. His blood cries for justice and the time to act is now, not later.
Enough is enough.

NIGERIA: Akpabio and Don Etim in Silent War

The battle for the soul of Ikot Ekpene politics is taking its toll as Gov. Akpabio... moves against a core loyalist of his Works Commissioner, Mr. Don Etim.
The governor had on Monday December 8, 2014, dispatched a team of armed police operatives, numbering well over 30, as well as the Director of SSS in the state to effect the arrest of Otuekong Nathaniel Uyo, publisher of Peace Letters and Head of the group known as Peace House.
A source who witnessed the incident said that the raid was carried out in a commando-like fashion as the security agents were said to have fired indiscriminately into the air, scaring residents and neighbors.
The source said the invading security operatives while taking away their suspect said they were acting on instruction from "above".
A security source, however, informed Weekly Insight that the governor had laid a complaint before security agencies in the state that Uyo was planning to "bomb the Akwa Ibom International Stadium on the day of the PDP governorship primaries".
A visit by our reporter to Otuekong Uyo's house showed disappointed members of his family who were weeping over his whereabouts.

Speaking, the sister to Uyo, Mrs. Eno Inyang said she was so disappointed at the sudden arrest of her brother who escaped assassination attempt on his life the previous night.
She explained that Otuekong Uyo has been a peace loving person who goes about his duties peacefully and wondered why his freedom should be infringed based on some reasons which neither the government nor police has been able to explain.
She appealed to the government to release her brother whose children are still too young to pass through the trauma of their father's incarceration.
Otuekong Nathaniel Uyo is a known loyalist of Mr. Don Etim, who Weekly Insight learnt was positioning his brother, Ken for the Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara/Essien Udim Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.
Their dream was, however, truncated when Gov Akpabio railroaded the political machinery in the area into accepting what a high ranking politician in the area called the "imposition of Hon Emmanuel Akpan, member representing Essien Udim in the state House of Assembly as the PDP candidate for the House of Reps position".
Another source said that Uyo and many other core Ikot Ekpene politicians were being attacked for their firm support for Mr Nsima Ekere, against the desperate effort of the governor to have Udom Emmanuel succeed him as governor.
Our source hinted that though Mr. Etim was not happy with the turn of events, he has remained silent not to incur the wrath of Akpabio, who recently has been known to show little tolerance to any form of opposition to his Udom project, no matter how subtle.
It will be recalled that Akpabio had to dispence of his long standing loyalist and principal hit man in Ikot Ekpene, when he schemed Mr Sunny Ibanga out as the chairman of the Ikot Ekpene chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, "dashing" him in the process the Village Headship of his village, all because he was known to have a soft spot for Mr. Nsima Ekere's governorship aspiration.
It would be recalled that Otuekong is a strong political factor in Ikot Ekpene whose support for any candidate is paramount for the candidate's success.
Meanwhile, the staff of peace letters Newspaper have appealed to the NUJ to intervene in the immediate release of their chairman, noting that as a man who has fulfilled all the demands of the union, he should not be left alone in time like this.

WORLD NEWS: Cop who caught starving mother stealing eggs gives her two truckloads of food to feed her family

The compassion shown by Officer William Stacy to desperate Alabama mother Helen Johnson captured the nation's attention at a time of strained relations between the police and black Americans.
Instead of arresting her for stealing five eggs to feed her starving family on Saturday, Stacy bought the carton and the touching hug they shared afterwards caught on video by a stunned passer-by went viral.
But it got even better on Wednesday when Officer Stacy and some colleagues arrived at 47-year-old Johnson's home with two truckloads of food to keep her and her children and grandchildren fed through Christmas.

The last time I saw my house this full, I was 12-years-old and staying with my grandmother,'' said Johnson to Al.Com. 'I've been crying all day.'

The reaction to the viral hug was so imense that Tarrant Police Chief Dennie Reno said that he had to bring in a second police dispatch officer just to field the calls of donations for Johnson coming in from the around the country.
'As of right now, with all the stuff going on in Ferguson and New York and all over the US, it's good to have this kind of story,' said Officer Stacy to AL.Com. 'It gives a positive image for law enforcement.'
Officers also set up a fund at People's First Federal Credit Union in Tarrant with all the money pouring in destined to be handed to the Johnson family.
'It's growing and growing and growing,' said Reno to Al.Com. 'A guy called me from New York and just broke down. He said for two months he's been angry with police, and he said this has totally changed his mind.'
But Reno said that the best outcome for everyone out of the heart-warming episode was that Johnson will not be forced to steal just to feed her family, especially during the Holidays.
'This woman's getting plenty of food,' said Reno to Al.com. 'She shouldn't be hungry for a while.'
Every week Johnson feeds her two daughters, niece and two grandchildren, ages 1 and 3 with her welfare check of just $120 a month.
However, last week the money was lost in the mail, leaving the Johnsons perilously close to starvation.
By Saturday, the family had not eaten for two days, so Johnson went to Dollar General with only $1.25 to try and buy eggs.
To her despair she found herself 50 cents short of the tax and put five eggs into her pockets.
At the time it may not have seemed that way, but fortuitously the eggs broke in her pocket.
'I am not a good thief at all,' said Johnson to Al.Com.
Stopped as she tried to leave with egg whites and yolks dripping from her jacket pocket, Johnson admitted immediately she had stolen them.
The store had already called the police and when Officer Stacy arrived he told her to stay where she was while he spoke to the store owners.
They decided together not to press charges against Johnson but when they went to speak to the grandmother she expected the handcuffs to come out.
'She started crying, she got very emotional and was very apologetic,' said Stacy said. 'She tried to give me the money she had on her, $1.25.'
It was then that Stacy explained that she was not going to be arrested. He remembered her from a prior visit to her house and recalled how poverty stricken she was. Her family all sleep on mattresses on the floor.
'The story she told me Saturday matched up with what I had seen when I was there,' said Stacy according to Al.com.
'I felt like it was the right thing to do. I didn't want to pass judgment on her.'
He bought her a carton of eggs and when Johnson asked Stacy how she could repay him, he simply asked her never to shoplift again.
'I hope she won't do it again. I pray she doesn't, and I don't think she will,' said Stacy.
Just before she got into her car, Johnson turned to hug Stacy and unknown to them, the moment was captured on cellphone by Robert 'Dollar' Tripp who posted it to Facebook with the hashtag, 'feelgoodstoryoftheday'.
